Aténa  je starogrécka bohyňa múdrosti, odvahy, inšpirácie, práva a spravodlivosti, strategicky vedenej vojny, umenia, remesiel a zručnosti. Etruskovia si ju spájali s ich bohyňou Menrvou a neskôr Rimania s Minervou.Aténa mala viacero prívlastkov. Aténa Parthenos znamenala panenskú bohyňu, Athéna Níké zase bohyňu víťastva (v Aténach na Akropole jej bol zasvätený chrám Atény Níké). Aténa Leukothea znamenala Aténu s belostnými ramenami, Aténa Chalkiotis – bola uctievaná v Sparte ako Aténa v kovovom chráme.
Aténa bola patrónkou tkáčskeho umenia a iných remesiel, múdrosti a boja. Na rozdiel od Áresa, ktorý bol v boji prchký a nespoľahlivý v boji, Aténinými prednosťami boli stratégia a taktika – symbolizovala vojnu vedenú umiernene a s rozvahou. Keď sa postavila na stranu Grékov vo vojne proti Tróji, pomáhala Odyseovi na jeho ceste domov.

Athena is the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, law and justice, strategically conducted warfare, arts, crafts and skill. The Etruscans associated her with their goddess Menrva and later the Romans with Minerva. Athena had several epithets. Athena Parthenos meant the virgin goddess, Athena Nike the goddess of victory (in Athens on the Acropolis the temple of Athena Nike was dedicated to her). Athena Leucothea meant Athena with white arms, Athena Chalkiotis – she was worshipped in Sparta as Athena in the metal temple.
Athena was the patroness of weaving and other crafts, wisdom and war. Unlike Ares, who was volatile and unreliable in battle, Athena’s strengths were strategy and tactics – she symbolized war conducted with moderation and prudence. When she sided with the Greeks in the war against Troy, she helped Odysseus on his journey home.
